Discover the Clay Hills and the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore

with Fiorenza.

A place of peace, nature, where the community of monks of the Olivetan Benedictine order “works and prays” (“ora et labora”, according to the Rule of San Benedetto) and becomes the custodian of extraordinary artistic treasures such as the Benedictine Choir by Fra Giovanni from Verona and the frescoes by Luca Signorelli, a Cortonese artist beloved by Michelangelo, and by Antonio Bazzi, known as “Il Sodoma” which we will find in the Cloister of the Abbey. Here the story of the saint is told in pictures, not without some joke by Sodoma … an exceptional artist whom the monks had nicknamed “the brick”! The bond between the Abbey and Siena and the events that crossed the city in the 14th century was very strong: it was the Sienese Bernardo Tolomei who, abandoning the wealth of his family, decided to found the Order and the Abbey and here with many other monks he died from the terrible plague of 1348. After visiting the Abbey, we will move (with our own means) to Chiusure, one of the most suggestive villages of the Crete Senesi for a pleasant walk with breathtaking views.
